21st Century Villages

For Essex residents who live in villages and rural locations, the way of life has changed dramatically over the past 30 years; local services have closed down, public transport has reduced, house prices have increased and work patterns have changed. Villages have constantly had to evolve and adapt, always facing new challenges.

The time has come to assess the challenges faced by rural communities in the 21st Century. Amongst the most critical issues are those of climate change and the decline in global oil supplies. These will have far reaching effects on rural life and many services will need to be redesigned to take these factors into account.

ACRE, the national network of Rural Community Councils, has created a programme of events across the country to raise awareness of the issues and the solutions raised by climate change and fuel limitations. The website includes information about the 21st century village programme and a collection of resources to assist rural communities.
