The 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are coming to London and the Mountain Biking event will be taking place in Essex at Hadleigh Farm, Hadleigh, Essex.

With Essex uniquely positioned to take advantage of the vast range of opportunities that the Games will bring to all organisations, councils, companies, groups and individuals to play their part in this once in a lifetime experience.

In the meantime there is a chance for parishes to be involved in the celebrations in July with two years to go until the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the greatest show on earth!

Essex Legacy from the 2012 Games invites groups and organisations in the rural communities to take part in Open Weekend 2010, on 23-25 July.

Now in its third year, Open Weekend has already enabled over a million people to take part in sport, arts and culture events across the length and breadth of the UK. Open Weekend is part of the Cultural Olympiad and is one of several projects underway as part of the four year programme leading up to the 2012 Games aimed at adding to the excitement of the Games, but also to create a legacy that will include participation after the Games.

This year London 2012 and Essex are inviting organisations and venues across the UK to set a challenge for the public to participate in with the theme of sport and physical activity, this could include a come and try in any sport, organise a treasure hunt or walk, or stage a mass aerobics session - it's entirely up to you.

In Essex it’s an opportunity for local community groups to showcase themselves and inspire others, and to help this we’re launching the Essex Legacy Open Weekend and making grants available to enable parish or town councils, community groups or organisations organise small sporting or physical activity events to mark London 2012 Open Weekend.
