Essex has a wonderful variety of villages but a feature common to all of them are the efforts local people make to strengthen and sustain community life. Up until the pandemic intervened in 2020, RCCE ran the Essex Village of the Year Competition annually to celebrate and reward these efforts.

We had hoped to relaunch the competition this year, but after careful reflection we’ve decided to delay for a further year and relaunch it in 2024, as we feel the extra year will give us more time to review and refresh the competition and secure the support of sponsors.

We will bring you more information on our plans for Essex Village of the Year later this year. The challenges of recent times have brought out the best in our rural communities and we look forward to celebrating this with a revamped competition in 2024.

The origins of RCCE’s popular annual competition date back to the 1950s.

In recent years, it has been sponsored by Essex & Suffolk Water and Inkpen Downie Architecture & Design Ltd.

The focus of the competition is always on the efforts local people are making to strengthen and sustain rural community life.
