The annual Essex Life Community Magazine Awards competition is organised by RCCE with backing from Essex Life, the Diocese of Chelmsford and Newport News, the eye-catching magazine from Newport, near Saffron Walden which has done much over the years to encourage other villages to follow its example.

A previous winner back in 2008, this time ‘Ambo’ beat off strong competition from the runner-up, ‘The Yellow Book’, from nearby Steeple Bumpstead, and from two joint third prize winners, ‘The Link’ from Stansted Mountfitchet and last year’s winner ‘Theydon Bois Village News’. There was also an award for ‘Ongar News’ as the best new entry and merit awards for the magazines from Arkesden, Great Bentley and Felsted and Little Dunmow.

The winners received their awards at a reception held at The Peldon Rose at the end of January.

The RCCE competition is designed exclusively for magazines edited and put together by volunteers and this year attracted more than 40 entries. Commenting on the competition, RCCE Executive Director, Nick Shuttleworth said; “To judge from the entries received this year these dedicated volunteers are doing more than ever to keep local people informed and aware of what’s happening in their area. Community magazines appear to be more popular than ever.”
